Both types of creationism reject that scientific principles such as natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life began on Earth. They assert that evolution is not possible because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern science shunned miracles because they feared they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their view "theistic evolution."
